Greek Baklava

It would be a true sin if u didn’t try baklava when visiting balkan countries. It’s one of the most popular deserts of this region. Turks, Greeks and many more nationalities,are still arguing about it’s true origin to this day. Even if we don’t know from where baklava really came from, we can surelly agree on one thing- when visiting balkans we can buy it in almost every bakery.

Ingredients:

1. 3 tablespoons sugar 

2. 1 teaspoon cinnamon 

3. 300g walnuts 

4. Approximately 480 – 500g filo pastry 

5. 200g butter 

Syrup:

50g honey 

150ml water 

1 tbsp lemon juice 

170g sugar

How to prepare baklava?

Mix nuts cinnamon and sugar. Lay out the first sheet of filo dough, grease and sprinkle with nuts. Grease each sheet on both sides and nuts again and so do until the ingredients are exhausted, and there should be nuts on top. Put in the oven at about 150 degrees for half an hour As it cools cut into rhomboids and pour hot syrup, which as it cools put in the refrigerator. Boil all the ingredients together. When you put the cake on the plate additionally pour the syrup over the cake.

 

The greek version of baklava will have Italian nuts and/or almonds meanwhile turkish balaklava is served with pistachios. Baklava is so popular, thag people are starting to make its new versions, as chocollate baklava or baklava with fruits and sweet cheese.

Baklava is a great dessert and choice for coffee! It is appreciated by locals and loved by tourists!
